MARY SWANSTROM, MS, LAT, ATC
Athletic Training, World & US Rugby Education Expert
Mary has worked as an athletic trainer in a variety of settings. She worked in the collegiate setting at University of Illinois, Chicago (Track and Field/Cross Country), in professional sports (Major League Rugby, Houston Sabercats), and a spent a brief time with the Airforce working with the OHWS (Optimizing the Human Weapon System) program with Fighter Pilots.
Athletic training is not the first career that has helped shape her professional experience. She started working in TV across various television stations and as a freelance sideline camera for numerous sporting events. She then transitioned to a nuclear machinist mate in the US Navy. She served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom on the Aircraft Carrier USS John C Stennis during 9/11.
A constant through it all has been her involvement in the rugby community, as a player then a coach and a coach educator and trainer for World Rugby, since 1991. She is currently an assistant coach for the Northern California Under 23 Women's All-Star program and UC Davis Men's Rugby Club. She guest coaches and speaks at conferences around the US. As a coach and S&C educator, she leads classes for new and developing coaches around the US.
Originally from Minnesota, Mary received her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science/Kinesiology from Sacramento State, including a Strength and Conditioning internship with the football and rowing teams. Her masters degree is from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN in Athletic Training. She is certified in Applied Function Science, Functional Soft Tissue Transformation, Graston, Dry Needling, World Rugby Immediate Care in Rugby, SafeSport, World Rugby Coaching, World Rugby Coach Educator/ Trainer.
